The English word “application server” means in German “Anwendungsserver”. The application server is a server which makes network-compatible application programs available for so called clients in a network and often also acts as server for central database systems. The runtime environment of an application server offers many advantages like an optional scalability and numerous functions like e.g. calibration-, monitoring-functions as well as an extensive software management with patches, upgrades and much more.
